A chaperone is there to protect the patient’s welfare and provide reassurance, and to safeguard staff during sensitive examinations.
All patients are entitled to have a chaperone present during any consultation, examination or procedure.
For intimate examinations, the clinician will offer a trained chaperone and explain their role.
This practice is committed to putting patients at ease whenever possible. You are welcome to bring a family member or friend for support. However, this does not replace the offer of a trained staff chaperone, who may also be present to support your care and safety.
Children and young people will be supported according to their age, understanding and consent, and offered an appropriate chaperone in line with safeguarding guidance.
